Hi YPIAers:

Come celebrate Mexico's Day of the Dead. It is a time in culture that both honors and celebrates the loved ones who have passed on.

Bring you family and friends, coworkers, neighbors, date, etc.. Come and go as you please.

Traditional alters are decorated with deceased's favorite food - tamales (a corn spread snack/side filled with meat, beans or veggies all wrapped in a steamed corn husk) cookies, etc.., favorite photos, adorned with candles and "pan de muerto" - (skull shaped bread). Some families will pay Mariachis to play near the grave site.

It is both a happy and sad occasion as is someone's funeral - a little similar to the New Orleans (version with a brass band walking the coffin down the street). (Different from other cultures where funerals are somber).

Tex-Mex song "Que me llevan canciones" by Gruppo Mazz (1991) explains how many Mexicans and Mexican Americans view death - What song will you bring me (when I die) - the singer requests "when I die I want: a Marchia band that forms a concert where the songs are rancheras ( a specific music that pairs with a couples dance). I want beautiful and happy songs. Let there be liquor, invite everyone to drink. Let this be my ultimate celebration. "
