This session is mainly in-person, with the presenter in the room, but if you need a Teams link, I can send you one on the morning of the event. The first half hour of the in-person meeting will be networking over pizza. The presentation will start after that.

Power BI reports are great — until you need something outside the report canvas: custom UX, actions on data, or business logic that isn't DAX. This session introduces Fabric Apps, Microsoft's framework for building fully custom web applications on top of the data you already have — a Power BI semantic model, a SQL database, or another source.

We start with the fundamentals — what a Fabric App actually is, where it sits next to a Power BI report, Power Apps, and a from-scratch build, and how the pieces fit together: the semantic model underneath, the Rayfin framework handling auth and backend, and Fabric's deployment model on top.

From there we go hands-on: scaffolding a new Fabric App, wiring it to a semantic model with DAX, building the UI with AI coding agents in the loop, and deploying it end-to-end — shown as a recorded walkthrough of the whole build, start to finish.

WHAT YOU'LL TAKE AWAY

  1. When to reach for a Fabric App instead of a Power BI report, Power Apps, or a bespoke build from scratch
  2. How an app connects to a governed semantic model — and why measures, definitions and row-level security stay intact
  3. What Rayfin handles for you: authentication, an Azure Functions backend, connection config, and one-command deployment
  4. What the end-to-end developer experience actually looks like, from an empty folder to a deployed app.
