Description: REGISTRATION REQUIRED for this moderate+ ~5.1 mile point to point hike with ~850' gain. The start of this route is the steepest and most challenging until you reach the Peak Mountain summit. Please meet at 9:15 am to car spot at 2801 Phelps Rd, Suffield, CT 42.006, -72.7258 (near RT 168/Mountain Rd). We will then carpool (~8 min) to start at Metacomet Trail Trailhead, 8 Newgate Rd, East Granby, Ct 41.94727, -72.73995. From the NET: " The terrain on this trail section is moderately difficult with some long climbs. Steep ascents are rewarded with excellent views of the Metacomet Ridge, Heublein Tower, the Barndoor Hills, Manituck Mountain, Litchfield Hills and, at the base of the ridge, Old Newgate Prison. Chimney Point is one of several examples of the Metacomet basalt eroding into chimney-like spires along the cliff edge." Roots, rocks, potentially muddy in spots so sturdy hiking shoes with good traction required & hiking poles suggested. Dress in layers & please bring 10 essentials including water (1.5 liter+), snacks/lunch, sunscreen & personal meds/first aid items. If potentially snowy and/or icy, please bring microspikes. Heavy rain cancels.
