This one night backpacking trip is designed as a way to test your cold weather equipment and plans. We will backpack in just one mile at Sky Meadows State Park and spend the night in the group site. The campsite has tables, a bear locker and good quality pit toilets. After setting up camp, we will walk up to the Appalachian Trail with just a day pack and hike along for a couple of miles, then return. We will break camp and hike out after breakfast on Sunday.

More info:
It could certainly get down to freezing. Is your sleeping bag warm enough? It should say it is good to 15 degrees. Maybe you will take a bottle of warm water into the bag with you. What will you do to keep your hands, feet and head warm? Mittens, hand warmers, just-right socks, hat and maybe a scarf. What will you do when it gets dark so very early? Sit by the fire. Plan your New Year's resolutions. Read in your sleeping bag. Bundle up and play cards. Cold calls for more calories -- what will you eat and drink? Maybe you will bring a thermos for a warm beverage. We will talk these and other issues through with you before we go.

This is designed for people with hiking and backpacking experience who want to begin extending the season into Dec, Jan, and Feb. Sky could be crystal clear in this Dark Sky Park!
