See all- Tawharanui TrundleNew World Victoria Park, Auckland
Greetings Everyone - Tawharanui Regional Park is one of the gems in the collection of Auckland parks. It is a predator free peninsula and is always great for a wander. It hosts some of our region's most beautiful white sand beaches, rolling pastures, shingled bays, native coastal forest and regenerating wetlands. And if we are lucky we may also have some close encounters with rarely seen native wildlife (birds).
Let's do a big loop, out to the end at Takatu Point, back along the southern side all the way to the lagoon, up and over the small hill to the beach on the northern side and back to the car park.
It will be an easy hike this week. Our highest point is just 91m, the tracks will be well formed, a gentle trundle compared to my last two hikes. Length 14-16km. We'll be sticking to the tracks as the tides are not favourable for a coastal route.
On our drive back to Auckland we will stop in at the Matakana Village Pub for some well deserved refreshments.
Duration: About 5 hours hike including stops.
Distance: Approx 14-16 km.
Difficulty: 2.5 on our 1-5 scale for day hikes.

- Coromandel Forest - Maratoto: Old Wires TrackNew World Victoria Park, Auckland
Greetings Everyone - Join us this Sunday as we explore the Coromandel Forest and walk the Old Wires Track and return via the Maratoto 4WD Road
● Some words to Inspire you:
Trekking the Maratoto: Old Wires Track in the Coromandel Forest offers a rewarding adventure through dense native bush, historic sites, and rugged terrain. This moderate to challenging trail follows an old telegraph wire route, once used to connect Coromandel to Waikato, adding a fascinating historical touch to the journey. The track winds through lush forest, with towering rimu and kahikatea trees, and crosses clear streams before climbing to spectacular viewpoints overlooking the Pohuehue Valley.
Walkers will also come across remnants of old mining and logging operations, reminders of the area's rich past.
The muddy and uneven terrain can be challenging, especially after rain, making sturdy footwear essential. However, the peaceful remoteness and stunning scenery make it well worth the effort.
Whether you're a history buff or a nature lover, the Old Wires Track offers a perfect mix of wilderness, history, and adventure in the heart of Coromandel Forest.
