New year, new me!

UPDATE: We have storms rolling in again, so Mission Peak is off the itinerary since it's going to be very slippery on the hilly parts (forecast from Weather Channel, Accuweather, and Wunderground). To be safe, we'll meet at Big Al's around 3:30 since that's indoors. If the weather clears up in the evening, we can carpool over to Alviso together since that's just 10 minutes away from Big Al's (Alviso is also forecasted from rain, so this might be unlikely: Weather Channel, Accuweather, Wunderground). NFL playoffs also start this Saturday and Big Al's has a bunch of large screens, bar, and food/drinks, so you'll have plenty of entertainment options!

Updated plan:
Ideally if the weather was nice, we would have been outside and gone on a leisurely stroll in Alviso or hiked Mission Peak, but it's going to be raining... so let's make the most of the first Saturday of 2026!

If you haven't been to Big Al's before, there's an arcade (on your left as you walk in), a bowling alley (on your right as you walk in), food/bar/TV area (straight ahead), and an open area (towards the left after you walk in) with some more arcade games, giant Jenga, darts, and table tennis.

Let's meet in the large open area right next to the giant Scrabble board, then we can make our way around and do other things after.

I'll bring some board games, and if you have any games you like, bring those as well!

If you want to get food/lunch before or after (or during the event), you can get food at the venue, and there are also many options nearby. Here are the ones that are within the same complex/walk across the road:
- Cajun Crack'n
- Dish N Dash
- Dindigul Thalappakatti
- Banana Leaf (might be closed Sunday)
- Namma
- Taqueria Los Cuñados
- Idly Express
- In N Out
- Taco Bell
- KoKoLo Donburi
- Ramen 101
- Royal Thaali
- V Sushi
- Shabuya
- Mr. Hello Luosifen
- HL Peninsula Restaurant (this is fairly recent?)
- Romano's Macaroni Grill
- Aria Dining & Banquets Fine Indian Cuisine

If those aren't enough options for you, you can drive a mile and explore more spots in the Ranch 99 area.

Getting there
Public transportation: the 47 takes you right to McCarthy Ranch - you'll probably need to get to one of the 47 stops though, which is probably the main challenge. Transit App is pretty handy (example going from Diridion to Big Al's).

There is a pretty big parking lot, so driving is an option too. Please carpool if you can! https://www.groupcarpool.com/t/7mr28s

Original plan:
(No longer doing this) Let's hike Mission Peak to get a nice look at the last of 4 consecutive super moons. A supermoon is when the moon is very close to the Earth, so this should be a good night!

However, we're getting rain now and it's hard to predict what the weather will be like weeks in advance, so we may end up not hiking and doing something else. Tentatively, if it
- is dry a couple days before and not raining Saturday: hike Mission Peak
- is raining a couple days before but not raining Saturday: walk Alviso

  • is raining Saturday: board games/arcade/pool/hang out at Big Al's (most likely)
    - is snowing Saturday: hike Mission Peak 🏂

- the Mission Peak hike will be like, look at this
- Alviso walk will be like, take a look at this
- board games/arcade/pool/hang out at Big Al's will be like, look at this

Sunset is around 5:01 (https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/@5373693?month=1&year=2026) and moonrise is 5:28 (https://www.timeanddate.com/moon/@5373693?month=1&year=2026).

I'll update the description with more details as we get closer to the full moon and the weather forecast is better. We'll likely also get dinner/dessert after, so join us for that too!

In any case, come out and join us for a fun start to your new year!
