Mobile first, resident first – Yarra Ranges Council’s new online philosophy - Alex Gelbak & Kirsty Thomas
Yarra Ranges is one of Victoria’s largest councils, and provides hundreds of services to its community. With a huge increase in mobile website visitors, Yarra Ranges needed to not only update its website, but seriously re-think how it communicated, engaged and delivered services to an increasingly digital audience.
By adopting a task-focused, resident centric design philosophy, they delivered a refreshingly simple local government website experience that changes many pre-conceived notions about what’s important in a council website and why residents visit in the first place.
Alex and Kirsty will share their journey in planning and building the new Yarra Ranges Council website (http://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/Home) , the outcomes of the project, and where the website is heading in the future.
Alex Gelbak (@alexgelbak (https://twitter.com/alexgelbak)) is the Director of Innovation and Strategy at Seamless (http://www.seamlesscms.com/Home). He gets excited about digital government, smart cities, game of thrones and cards against humanity. Seamless helps cities & governments deliver better online services via their website and intranets.
Kirsty Thomas (@thatkirstygirl (https://twitter.com/thatkirstygirl)) is the Digital Coordinator at Yarra Ranges Council. She manages Council’s web and intranet and ensures that the online services and communications provided to council residents and staff are engaging and user friendly. She’s passionate about driving change within the organisation to improve online service delivery , listening to her eclectic music collection and playing the guitar badly.
