Join us for a free guided bike ride at a leisurely pace from Wickham to Warabrook Wetlands, and back. 21km return. Optional lunch after the ride at a nearby cafe.

New people always very welcome! Children permitted only if they are a passenger on an adult's bike.

Brief route description: We follow the R6 Newcastle Cycling Route to Callaghan University, then ride through the campus to go over the Warabrook Station overpass, on the other side of which is the Wetlands. We cycle a 15 minute little loop around the wetland paths, before cycling back the way we came.

✨This ride is mostly on shared paths and quiet low-speed streets, plus one busier 50km/hr road.

✨This cycling route connects Maryville, Tighes Hill, Mayfield, Waratah, Callaghan, and Warabrook.

Start/finish point: Tree of Knowledge Park, Hannell St, Wickham (it's next to the big outdoor carpark that's at the corner of Honeysuckle Dr & Hannell St)

Start time: meet at 9:45am for a 10am departure
Finish time: approx 12:30pm, then optional lunch at a nearby cafe

Relative cycling fitness level: very easy/easy/ MEDIUM /hard/very hard

Suitable for: those with a good cycling fitness level, who can cycle for 1.5-2 hours at a slow pace of 15km/hr, and can manage about 6 steep hills (in both directions). No experience cycling in a group or roads necessary. You just need good bike-handling skills, and awareness of your surroundings.

Topography: in each direction, there will be: two steep but short railway bridges; 800 metres of fairly gentle hills; a 50 metre very steep hill (you're welcome to walk this one); a 100 metre steep hill

Pace: slow and easy pace, 15km/hr

Infrastructure: 14km of shared paths, 6km of low-speed low-traffic streets, 500 metres of a 50km/hr medium-pressure street, 500 metres of separated cycleway

You’ll need:

  • helmet
  • bike with good working brakes and tyres pumped to the recommended PSI
  • bike lock (for when we stop, or for if you get a mechanical issue)
  • phone & opal card in case of puncture
  • a repair kit, if you have one (spare tube, tyre levers, patches, pump etc)
  • water bottle
  • snacks

Detailed RIde Description

  • Cycle to the end of the Throsby Creek shared path at Islington Park. (10 minutes)
  • To Waratah Station, via Hubbard St shared path, Chinchen St separated cycleway, and quiet Upfold St (10 minutes)
  • To Callaghan University, via Prince St, Lorna St, & Bridge St (15 minutes)
  • Cycle through the campus to Warabrook Station (5 minutes)
  • Walk over the railway bridge
  • Cycle 2 minutes on quiet streets
  • Approx 11am: Arrive at the wetlands. Have a drink break.
  • Ride 15 minutes around the wetlands paths. NOTE: there are no toilets nor water-bottle taps.
  • Approx 11:30am: Cycle back the we came.
  • Approx 12:30pm: Finish back at Wickham. Optional lunch/coffee.
