Biotech Start-ups: Tax, IP, and Law

What are the funding opportunities available at the different stages of R&D and commercialisation? How do you qualify for government R&D tax incentives? What are the eligibility criteria regarding entities, activities and deductions? What are the steps and strategies to qualify for these eligibility criteria? And how do you apply for it?

When's the best time to patent your idea or prototype? What are the different patent options available? What are other strategies in protecting your IP? We'll have two speakers on Thursday evening: Christopher Michaelides and James Heller. Christopher Michaelides, an IP lawyer and entrepreneur, will be here to answer all of your questions. Christopher studied law at UNSW, UTS and Harvard Law Schools. He and his team have won multiple hackathons including HealthHack 2014 and were back-to-back winners of BattleHack Australia in 2014 & 2015, a global hackathon sponsored by PayPal and its Braintree subsidiary.

James Heller is a finance and IP lawyer and leads Intellectual Property and Crowdfunding roundtable meetup. He's studied at UPenn and Sydney Law School and is currently completing his PhD in Law at UNSW.
