The Sandstone Trail is one of the finest and most popular long distance walks in the UK.
The Trail stretches for 34 miles along Cheshire’s Sandstone Ridge and offers superb, unbroken, and often elevated walking across the still largely green and pleasant English county of Cheshire.
Starting in the ancient market town of Frodsham on the Mersey estuary in Cheshire, the Sandstone Trail follows the sandstone ridges of the cheshire plains, passing beautiful rolling countryside, pretty villages and bagging a handful of castles, including Beeston Castle, a former royal castle, built in the 1220s and later owned by Henry III, which sits perched upon it’s rocky sandstone crag.
Take in astounding panoramic views from a multitude of fantastic view points, all the way south to the Georgian town of Whitchurch, in Shropshire.
Experience the very best of Cheshire … Sandstone cliffs, Delamere Forest, prehistoric hillforts, half-timbered, black and white sandstone manor houses and medieval and Victorian castles. Plus historic inns, Roman roads, caves, rivers, streams and beautiful rural canals, including Wharton’s and Willeymoor locks and Grindley Brook staircase lock on the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, not to mention the wildlife, Flora and fauna.
No wonder its been voted by Julia Bradbury and ITV viewers as one of ‘Britain’s favourite walks’.
Come and join us over three days of relaxed walking on this multi day adventure in a small sociable group, sharing the adventure, making new friends and staying in some fantastic establishments. - Crib Goch - Snowdon HorseshoePen-y-pass YHA, CaernarfonGBP 49.00

- DISTANCE - 7.5 miles
- TIME – 7-9 hours
- ASCENT – 1025m
- GUIDED – Walk with experienced Mountain Leaders
- DIFFICULTY – Challenging – A head for heights and some grade 1 scrambling involved.
Crib Goch as part of the Snowdon horse shoe must be the greatest of all routes for this Iconic mountain.
We start at the Pen-y-Pass carpark and follow the Pyg Track, before diverting to start what should be a really enjoyable scramble up to the knife edge ridge of Crib Goch, above the legendary glacial lakes of Llyn Llyndaw and Glaslyn below to our left.
We now traverse across this legendary ridge before continuing our ascent to the top.
The scramble itself is not so technical at all, but especially on the ridge itself, a head for heights is required as there is considerable exposure, although your fully qualified mountain leader will be there to help and encourage you.
We eventually summit Snowdon to see a spectacular panorama of stunning scenery from the roof top of Wales, including this unique route which we have taken to the top!
We descend via Y Lliwedd, with some more fantastic sections of scrambling to be had. The last section sees us join the Miner’s Track for an easy stroll with impressive views of behind and the southern slopes of the Glyderau mountains directly ahead.
Back at the start you can enjoy celebratory drinks and snacks at Mallory’s Cafe, you’ve certainly deserved it before jumping in your car or the sherpa bus back down to Llanberis.

The Ring of Steall is probably the most classic mountain route in Scotland!
You’ll need a good level of fitness, a head for heights and mental toughness for what is a long, tough but equally very rewarding day, taking in four munro and a massive 1676m of climbing!
On a clear day, the panoramic view from this classic ridge walk is possibly unrivalled in the UK.
The Ring of Steall starts from Glen Nevis, in Fort William (the starting point of an ascent of Ben Nevis) taking in the magnificent Steall Falls, made famous in the Harry Potter films and soon crossing the infamous wire bridge before making our way up to An Gearanach (982m). It’s a long way up, but at least most of the day’s climbing has been ticked off.
We then continue undulating along the ridge, scrambling in parts until we reach Stop Coire a’Chairn, where we take in views of the Grey Corries and the eastern Mamores.
After dropping down we climb up again to Am Bodach (The Old Man, 1032m).
Finally, we traverse ‘The Devil’s Ridge’ and the ascent up to Stop Coire a’Mhail, before descending the trickier section of ridge, after which we continue to our final munro, Sgorr a’Mhaim.
After taking in the incredible views of Devil’s Ridge and the whole Ring of Steall, we make our way back after an incredible, never to be forgotten mountain day! -
