Are We Melding With Machines?
Details
The media theorist Marshall McLuhan once observed that “we become what we behold. We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us.”
From the printing press to artificial intelligence, each generation has built technologies that reflect its desires — only to be reshaped by them in turn. As algorithms predict our choices and machines begin to think, the line between human and artificial grows increasingly uncertain. At our next Brisbane meetup, we’ll ask whether humanity is entering a new age of partnership or quiet surrender.
The questions we will address at this meetup are as follows:
- Are we using technology — or is technology using us?
- Will AI enhance human creativity, or make it obsolete?
- If machines can think and feel, should they share our moral status?
This event will be held at The Osbourne Hotel in Fortitude Valley.
After the discussion, we’ll stay on for a meal and a drink together — a chance to continue the conversation in a more relaxed setting and support the venue.
PLEASE NOTE:
– Please support the venue by purchasing a drink or meal during the event.
– This is intended to be a good-natured but robust discussion. Please be respectful and prepared to have your ideas challenged. If you are easily offended, this event may not be for you.
