The electricity grid is considered to be the largest and most complex machines humans have ever built. As soon as power is generated, it travels near the speed of light down transmission lines and is consumed almost instantly. Every time you flip a light switch, that delicate balance changes.

To determine how power generation is split between different energy sources, an optimization algorithm must continuously weigh constraints and calculate the ideal energy mix in real time—a process repeated every 5 minutes, 24/7 in the Australian National Electricity Market.

In this workshop, Dr. Jack Simpson will walk us through:

*How this grid dispatch algorithm actually works

  • The surprising complexity and constraints involved in real-world energy markets
*How these models are used to forecast future electricity infrastructure needs

What to Bring & Prerequisites

  • Please bring a laptop to follow along
*Basic Python knowledge will be helpful for the hands-on portion.
