🌕 Fun Fact
🪱 The name “Worm Moon” refers to earthworms resurfacing as the ground begins to thaw, signaling the return of spring.
❕Indigenous moon names vary by Nation and region and reflect local seasonal knowledge and language traditions.
🌑 Our silent sentinel stabilizes our planet’s axial wobble, regulates tides, and reflects radiation from the sun to us.
Among countless other influences, the Moon has been an integral part of our planet, all its inhabitants, and our culture at large.
🌒 Let’s partake in a long-established tradition of walking at night by the light of our celestial sibling and sharing stories and spaces together.
🌓 We will begin with plenty of light, but expect to be hiking at dusk and in the dark.
🔦 Lighting Requirements (Important)
Headlamps and/or flashlights are mandatory
🚫 Phone lights are not acceptable substitutes.
🔴 Red-light filters or lenses strongly preferred
If you do not have a red lens, you will be expected to hike behind those that do.
🌔 We may be at the summit looking for the moonrise as expected, but this is not guaranteed.
Moonrise timing can vary depending on where it crests over the horizon.
🌄 Sometimes the moon rises before sunset, in which case we’ll simply enjoy both presences together if possible.
Be malleable. Learn to adapt.
🌕 Weather & Comfort
🧥 Bring layers, it can still get cold and is often windy at the top of Powell Butte.
🌧️ Cloudy or rainy weather will not cancel the hike, come rain-ready.
🥪 There will be time to eat snacks and use the “toilet-trees” at the summit.
⏳ Expect to linger up top (about an hour if weather permits), not moving, as we enjoy each other’s company and the often-taken-for-granted cosmic spectacle.
🌛 This is not exactly beginner-friendly.
We’ll be hiking 4–6 miles in low-light conditions with some elevation gain.
That said, we will not be moving fast, if you’re a beginner looking for a slightly challenging experience, this could be a good fit.
🅿️Parking & Transportation 🚗
🌜 This event is in town, no organized carpool.
If you need a ride, coordinate in the Event Chat.
🌚 No parking fees. Neighborhood street parking only.
Parking is limited, arrive early if unfamiliar with the area. We usually park on the South side of Center St. (closest to the park). I personally feel like this location is safest compared to the others (break in wise).
✅ You may park on SE Center St.
🚫 If you are at:
• 148th Ave entrance
• Main visitor center parking lot
YOU ARE AT THE WRONG LOCATION.
