Euchre Night!
The Brewmaster's Taproom, 2000 Benson Road South, Renton, WA, USEuchre Night: Cards, Cold Drinks, and Good Company
Looking for a relaxed night out where you can grab a beer, shuffle up a deck, and enjoy some easygoing fun? Euchre Night is the perfect excuse to unwind, meet a few new faces, and dive into a classic trick‑taking game without any pressure.
Whether you’re a seasoned pro who knows the joy of a perfectly timed loner or you’re still figuring out why the left bower suddenly becomes the boss, you’re welcome at the table. Partners will rotate throughout the night, giving everyone plenty of chances to play, chat, and maybe even pick up a sneaky strategy or two.
Haven’t played in a while, or never played at all? No worries — new players are always welcome, and Euchre is one of those games that clicks faster than you’d expect. I’m always happy to teach anyone how to play my favorite Midwestern card game, complete with all its quirky little rules. You’ll also find some basics below, along with a YouTube tutorial for anyone who’s brand‑new or just wants a quick refresher before jumping in.
YouTube Tutorial: How To Play Euchre: The Ultimate Guide - YouTube
How to Play:
1. Setup and Dealing- Players: Four, with partners sitting opposite each other.
- Deck: 24 cards (9, 10, J, Q, K, A of each suit).
- Deal:
Each player receives five cards, typically in rounds of 3 and 2, dealing clockwise
.- The Kitty: The remaining four cards are placed face down, and the top card is turned face up.
2. Calling Trump
- First Round: Starting left of the dealer, players pass or "order up" the top card. If ordered, the dealer adds that card to their hand and discards one. The suit of that card is trump.
- Second Round: If all pass, the top card is turned down. Players can then choose a new suit (not the turned-down one) as trump.
- Going Alone: A player may choose to play without their partner, aiming to win all tricks for higher points.
3. Gameplay
- Leading: The player to the left of the dealer leads the first card.
- Following Suit: Players must follow the suit led. If a player cannot, they may play a trump card or any other card.
- Winning Tricks: The highest card of the led suit wins, unless a trump card is played. Trump beats any other suit.
- Card Ranking: The Jack of the trump suit is the highest card (Right Bower), followed by the Jack of the same color (Left Bower). Next, the cards follow suit rank: Ace, King, Queen, 10, 9.
4. Scoring
- Winning: If the team that called trump ("makers") wins 3-4 tricks, they get 1 point. If they win all 5, they get 2 points.
- Euchred: If the "makers" fail to win at least 3 tricks, they are "euchred," and the opposing team gets 2 points.
- Alone: If a lone player wins 5 tricks, they earn 4 points.
- Game End: The first team to 10 points wins.
Key Rules & Tips
- Sticking the Dealer: If all players pass in both rounds, the dealer must choose a suit in some variations.
- Left Bower: If Spades are trump, the Jack of Spades is the highest (Right). The Jack of Clubs is the second highest (Left), functioning as a Spade for that hand.
- Farmer's Hand: A hand with no aces or face cards, which some play as a redeal.
