Welcome to the Spooky Spooky Book Club!

Our group is growing larger, and so I decided to try something different. I booked some space at the Olympia Timberland Library. The time is different (5pm instead of our usual 4pm) so please keep that in mind! We'll meet in the main lobby in the library 10 minutes before so we can start and make the best use of our time.

So without further ado.

Book of the Month: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

Book Summary
Hill House is not sane.

It stands alone against the hills, a brooding, many‑angled mansion built eighty years ago by a man who delighted in confusion and wrongness. Rooms twist where they should not; doors open where they ought not to be; the compass in the mind spins and fails. Cold spots linger in the halls, and at night, something walks the corridors, alone.

Dr. John Montague, a scholar of the supernatural, has come to Hill House to find proof of the ghostly. With him are three guests: the sensible, skeptical Theodora; the charming, careless heir Luke Sanderson; and Eleanor Vance, a quiet, lonely woman who has spent her life caring for a demanding mother and dreaming of a place where she might finally belong.

As the summer unfolds, the house begins to stir. Walls whisper, doors slam, and chilling messages appear in the dark. The others feel the cold, hear the knocking, see the impossible, but Eleanor feels it most of all.

To her, Hill House begins to feel like home.
And the house, it seems, has chosen her.

Don’t worry if you haven’t finished the book, we’ll start by chatting about whatever spooky (or not-so-spooky) reads we’re enjoying before diving into the featured title. Come for the eerie atmosphere, stay for the lively conversations and, of course, the cats, because let’s be honest, that’s why you’re really here, isn’t it? <--- I guess this isn't true anymore :(

*UPDATE: I completely forgot that the super bowl will be today! Instead of a meet and greet after the film, we will meet before the film at Northwest Grind (coffee shop located in the mall).

"Death Blows," but your February doesn't have to! Join us for an early afternoon showing of "Whistle." You can also meet us for a cup of coffee or tea at Northwest Grind before the film. Showtimes will be announced Tuesday February 3rd, so the exact start time will be announced then.

Synopsis: "A group of high school misfits inadvertently come across an ancient Aztec death whistle. Blowing it summons their future deaths to hunt them down."

"The Haunting" is based on Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House," which is this month's pick for Spooky Spooky Book Club. Sean or I will stream the film and share our screen for the group to watch on Google Meet. We will have time to discuss the film and the book after the showing.

Synopsis: "Dr. John Markway, an anthropologist with an interest in psychic phenomena, takes two specially selected women to Hill House, a reportedly haunted mansion."
