Houston Sierra Club (local branch of the Sierra Club) holds outings for outdoor activities: hiking, camping, bicycling, backpacking, kayaking, etc. These include local one-day events, weekend trips, and week long trips to National Parks and other destinations.

January Brings Trip to San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge
Location not specified yetSaturday, January 10, 2026, 9 am, the Houston Sierra Club will visit San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge (SBNWR) to enjoy birding and wildlife observation. We’ll look for hawks, egrets, herons, ducks, shorebirds, and other birds in the prairies, woods, and wetlands of SBNWR.

If you have COVID symptoms/are sick don’t come! We want everyone to be safe. By going on this outing, we will be with individuals who are vaccinated/unvaccinated. It’s each person’s choice to participate in this outing.
Bring a daypack, lunch, 2 quarts of water, snacks, hiking shoes, cameras, binoculars, spotting scopes, bug repellant, sunscreen, field guides, and warm clothes. Long pants are recommended! No pets/firearms/radios! Set your phones to silence. We’ll be back in Houston by 5 pm.
To carpool/caravan (voluntary) from Houston meet just W of the Starbucks in Meyerland Plaza at 7:30 am. Look for a “gray” Honda CRV (WMP 3632). Directions are:
1. S on SH 288 to FM 2004 in Brazoria Co.
2. Turn rt onto FM 2004 and go SW.
3. Pass Lake Jackson, cross Brazos River, and at the intersection of SH 36, FM 2004 becomes FM 2611. Continue SW on FM 2611.
4. Cross San Bernard River and take a lt on FM 2918.
5. Go on FM 2918 to CR 306.
6. Turn rt onto CR 306, go 2 m, and turn lt into SBNWR.
7. Drive to “Bobcat Woods” parking lot sign and turn rt.14 attendees

Sierra Club to Conduct Service Outing at Indiangrass Prairie
Location not specified yetSaturday, February 14, 2026, 9 am to noon, the Houston Sierra Club will work with the Coastal Prairie Conservancy (CPC) at its’ Indian Grass Prairie Preserve (IGP) for a service outing. We’ll enjoy camaraderie and have lunch in the City of Katy. The Sierra Club gives back so that the Katy Prairie is protected for wildlife, solitude, quiet, and enjoyment.
Bring a daypack, 2 qt water, snacks, lunch money, camera, and clothes for the weather. It’s usually cold in February so wear long pants, long-sleeved shirt, and closed-toed shoes. No pets, firearms, or radios. Put cell phones on vibrate and enjoy the solitude, quiet, and natural sounds of the Katy Prairie.
A Sierra Club sign-in agreement/liability waiver must be filled out/signed by all participants at the IGP. Group size is 20 participants, plus your leader. The following link has a participant sign-in agreement/liability waiver. Please read this before the outing so that you know what it says, we can sign-in quickly, and proceed with the outing. Before the outing, you must sign the CPS’s “Stewardship Saturdays” volunteer application and waiver of liability at their website: www.coastalprairieconservancy.org, where you click on “Get Involved”, “Volunteer”, “Stewardship Saturdays”, and “Go to Event Calendar”.

2) Exit Pederson Rd, turn rt, go N to US Hwy 90.
3) Turn lt on Hwy 90, go W 100 yds, turn rt on Morrison Rd/FM 2855.
4) Go N on Morrison Rd, past FM 529, to Pattison Rd.
5) Turn rt on Pattison Rd, go N to Herbert Rd.
6) Turn lt on Herbert Rd, go W 1 mile, turn lt into entrance for IGP, 31975 Herbert Rd, Waller, Tx 77484.5 attendees
