Study of Chapter 16, Verse 1:
The Classification of the Divine & Non-Divine Attributes
Discussion Themes:
- FEARLESSNESS: Vedanta philosophy emphasizes a quality rarely found in religion: Abhayam – Fearlessness. Trying ‘to improve human beings through fear’ usually leads to suppression and negative reactions.
- POSITIVE QUALITIES: The first verse of the 16th Chapter of the Bhagavad Gita highlights the many positive qualities we can nurture for a peaceful, happy and prosperous life. Qualities like purity of heart where ‘one makes no difference whatsoever between the welfare of oneself and the welfare of others’, and being steadfast in the wisest form of knowledge where we ‘distinguish between the things that are lasting and those that are evanescent’.
- OPPOSITE MEANINGS: There are two significant Sanskrit words that, when the syllables are reversed, give opposite meanings: When dama (self-control) is reversed, it becomes mada (inebriation, pride, arrogance). Without dama we can easily lapse into mada.
We're a multicultural group of varying ages, including our Vedanta Society members and friends. We always welcome new faces and hear new perspectives.
