Spicing up Boring Content
Details
The Inspiration...
Inspired by a post (https://community.articulate.com/discussions/building-better-courses/what-s-the-most-boring-content-you-ve-worked-with-and-how-did-you-spice-it-up) on Articulate's E-Learning Heroes discussion board, let's share how we've tackled the problem of making the mundane marvellous.
We've all had to do it...
Every trainer, instructional designer and learning developer has encountered the problem of dull-as-dishwater content. Most of us have been asked to 'just tell them the basics' and given something as exciting as watching grass grow. How have you tackled the problem and saved learners from a death worse than PowerPoint?
Tales from the trenches...
We'll start with a few learning warriors telling tales of projects that they've worked on, and battles they've won. Please email if you'd like to tell a tale at the start.
Group discussions (eLearning and live training)
We'll break into themed group discussions and present the most interesting thoughts and anecdotes at the end of the evening.
Running Order
• 5.45 - Doors open
• 6.00 - Introductions
• 6.15 - Tales from the trenches
• 6.45 - Split into groups to share ideas
• 7.15 - Groups report back their favourites
• 7.30 - Networking, chatting, exploring further
• 8.00 - Move on to The Argyle (http://www.theargylerocks.com/) for lubricated conversation
This will be a very social event. Everybody has to give a little to get a little. Expect interesting people and interesting ideas.
Electra Kolovos (https://au.linkedin.com/in/electrakolovos), from Quadtree, has volunteered to facilitate the group focussing on 'live' training. Electra is a LEARNX Gold Winner for Online Facilitator. She'll share some of her experiences and help us to share our ideas.
Shai Desai (https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=441047), from Learning Plan, is a 2015 LearningElite awards judge and will be looking after the 'on-demand' group. This will focus on asynchronous training, particularly eLearning. Shai has lots of experience trying to make dull WHS modules interesting, as well as working on many engaging eLearning projects, picking up multiple LearnX and AITD awards on the way.
SiteMinder (http://www.siteminder.com/) have very generously offered to host us at their offices in The Rocks. If you've booked a hotel online, then you've probably used their services without realising it!
There is a $10 fee for this event to cover a few snacks and a beer or two, or maybe a glass of wine at the end?
This is going to be fun. Start having a think now about how you've spiced up a bit of training and if there's an example you can share with the group.
