"The Potty Mouth Filter: Building an AI-Powered Profanity Filter for Jellyfin"

A transitioning Marine, a media server, and a couple of open-source speech recognition models walk into a .NET project. Out comes "The Potty Mouth Filter" — a Jellyfin plugin that automatically detects and filters profanity from video and audio content in real time.

In this talk, Andrew Walling shares his journey building the plugin as part of his Microsoft Software and Systems Academy (MSSA) capstone, including the AI pipeline that combines OpenAI's Whisper and Vosk to tackle speech-to-text challenges. He'll walk through the architecture, the trade-offs between the two models, and the rabbit holes he fell into along the way — from wrestling with C# plugin APIs to figuring out how two different transcription engines can complement each other.

This is a talk from the perspective of a student developer learning in public. Expect an honest look at what it's like to tackle AI and speech recognition as a newcomer, the lessons learned (sometimes the hard way), and why you don't have to be an expert to build something genuinely useful.

Andrew Walling is a software developer based in Rankin County, Mississippi. He's a transitioning U.S. Marine, a student in the Microsoft Software and Systems Academy's Cloud Application Development track, and is finishing his B.S. in Computer Science.
