We will begin today's 4.4 mile hike in Oregon Hill at 334 S. Pine Street (corner of Pine & Albemarle) and follow the murals as far north as Leigh Street and west to Henry Street. We will go from Oregon Hill to Cary and Foushee Streets, then to 6th, 7th and 8th before crossing Broad to see a high concentration of murals in historic Jackson Ward. We'll finish up by going west on Broad Street and working our way back to West Grace Street before returning to our starting point.
Murals will be found adorning what would otherwise be undecorated building walls, often in some unusual places. You'll soon realize that the artists can turn the most unlikely locations into amazing art works. The diversity of the murals' subject matter, the use of color, the incorporation of history and the scale of the renderings will mystify and amaze you. Starting with "Kaiya With Crown" to the "Astronauts Kissing While Being Filmed" the talent on display around Richmond will leave you wondering, "What next?" Only one way to find out...
Click here for more information on the murals as well as their locations and photographs.
All hikes will begin at the posted time, not five or ten minutes later. If you are unfamiliar with the meet up location, add a few minutes to your travel schedule so you can find us. If you need help with directions to the Meet Up rendezvous location, click on the small map under "How To Find Us" to display a larger interactive map if you are using your desktop computer. When you select "Directions" (upper left) the best route from your location to the Meet Up rendezvous spot will be calculated. Before the hike be sure to place anything that might invite theft in your trunk before you leave your car parked while you are hiking. Curbside parking is available near the Meet up location.
There is no requirement to possess any ability to negotiate tree roots, rustic trails, low hanging vines and branches, toxic plants, culverts, reptiles, damp trail conditions, stairs, spider webs, fallen trees, scorpions, birds of prey, migratory waterfowl, and river rocks today as this hike will be entirely on paved streets and sidewalks.
