Title:
You Don't Hate the 5x5 Matrix Enough - Quantification when you must use a Matrix
Abstract:
The 5×5 risk matrix is one of the most widely used tools in risk management and one of the most heavily criticised. Yet despite its shortcomings, many organisations continue to rely on it because governance loves simplicity, and boards love three colours.
This session isn't another argument for abandoning the matrix. Instead, it explores how to make better risk decisions when you're required to use one.
We'll examine why the seemingly simple risk matrix can produce inconsistent and mathematically illogical outcomes. What you can do when you want a more quantitative decision made. How you can avoid some of these hidden flaws that can undermine confidence in the advice we provide to stakeholders. I'll walk you through a practical approach to introducing quantification within an existing matrix-based framework, improving consistency and making risk decisions more defensible without changing your organisation's established methodology.
Risk has a shape, it's a triangle. You will see it can fit it into a 5x5 square hole.
