We will be traveling and backpacking to the bottom of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison Red Rock Canyon.
This hike descends 1,300 feet over 3.5 miles. This is intended for individuals with prior backpacking experience.

You will be required to bring your own personal gear on this hike; we will divvy carrying responsibilities once we establish our group. Every person, at minimum, is required to bring:

• Backpack
• Bear Box/Food
• Clothing/Spare Clothes
• Sleeping Bag
• Sleeping Pad
• Tent (1 Person)
• Trekking Poles
• Water Bladder (2L minimum)

Specialized Gear I will bring:

• First Aid Kit
• Navigational Aids
• PLB/Satphone/Radio

Gear that will be required but one to two people can bring to share with the group:

• Backpacking Stove & Gas
• Dehydrated Food
• PLB/Satphone/Radio
• First Aid Kit
• Plates & Utensils
• Water Filter

Ensure your water bladder is completely full prior to beginning the hike. Water is only available at the bottom of the canyon and cannot be collected along the way down. Poison ivy is rampant. Pets are not allowed.

Depending on group concensus, one more night of camping may be done to allow for rest and recovery. At the end of the trip, we will stop by Ouray for a hot springs soak. Each individual is responsible for the costs of the hot springs experience.

*Climbing here MAY be free, but only under the following conditions:

1. You haven’t climbed here before
2. You request the use of a local pass with me prior to the event (over text or when we meet in the lobby)
3. You DO NOT go to the front desk expecting a day pass to be free, then get angry with staff when they say it’s not free (this behavior will not be tolerated). The Meetup QR code is not affiliated with Gripstone!

(A local pass includes free rental gear, but only one pass can be given per day per member).

Note: I am not a staff member, nor do I have any sort of endorsement from Gripstone. If you get in with a local pass and are interested in a membership at Gripstone, per their policy you only have one week to sign up for the 30 day trial period ($50). If you exceed one week, the trial period will not be available for you, and you will have to go with other paid options to get into the facility.
