Sunday Bus: Strzelecki Ranges Rail Trail and Brewery - 13km and 17km - 8 Feb
Details
WALK DESCRIPTION:
The Strzelecki Ranges Railway runs between the villages of Boolarra and Mirboo North; originally built in 1885 to open the area to settlement by allowing the economic transportation of produce; the railway remained operational for 88 years, closing in 1974. At the time of its construction the terrain was considered challenging prompting the engineering challenge and construction of numerous embankments and bridges making the railway one of historical significance.
The trail passes through a range of distinct vegetation types and land use areas including fern gullies, farming areas, plantations and areas of Strzelecki Gums, Mountain Ash, Manna Gums, Yertchuk, Peppermint and Mountain Grey Gums and wattles which attract an array of native animals and birdlife.
The terrain is gently undulating with many shaded areas and well-formed tracks making it suitable for beginners or more seasoned walkers alike, who are looking for a relaxing mid-Summer hike.
The walk ends in Mirboo North where there will be time to enjoy a drink at the Grand Ridge Brewery; perhaps treat yourself to a tasting pallet, or have a coffee or soft drink. Alternatively you could take a stroll around this little hippy town and perhaps drop into one of the cafes. A reminder to bring a change of footwear for the trip back, because dirty boots leave marks on the bus that our club pays to have cleaned.
Please note that at this time of year there is always a possibility of encountering snakes, and appropriate leg covering is recommended.
As the weather can be warm at this time of year, please carry at least 2 litres of water.

CAN I MEET AT THE START OF THE WALK? No! Since Sunday Bus walks are generally walks starting and finishing at two widely separated locations we do not accept walkers meeting at the start of the walk. There is no way for them to get back to their transport. We can arrange for a pick-up and drop-off at a designated location along the route closer to Melbourne, however, the full bus fee is still payable since a seat has to be kept free on the bus.
.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Registration (membership) on Meetup is not the same as paid-up Membership of MBW. To become a paid-up Member with online booking and other benefits see: https://mbw.org.au/MBW_membership.php
