Special Mid-Week Docent-Led Tour: Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament
Details
Enjoy a rare mid-week guided tour of Sacramento’s historic and stunning Roman Catholic cathedral while it’s still fully decorated for Christmas!
Some background on the Cathedral: The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament was built between 1886-89 by Bishop Patrick Manogue, the first Bishop of Sacramento and an Irish immigrant during the Potato Famine, in part with money that he accumulated as a miner during the California Gold Rush in his youth. It is designed after a famous church in Paris and it houses stunning pieces of art in the form of paintings, carvings, stained glass windows, works in gold and silver, and many other objects donated by famous Sacramento characters like Mrs. Margaret Crocker, Mrs. Jane Stanford, Mr. David Lubin, and many others, now famous in California history. Tours have been going strong for the last 20 years since the last restoration of 2003-05 and they are offered in Chinese, Spanish, and English on Sundays and as private tours the rest of the week. From this Cathedral, the Catholic Church administers the needs of over 1 million Catholics, over a 42,000 square mile territory stretching from the Bay Area to Oregon and Nevada, servicing 103 parish churches, and working with almost 200 Diocesan priests, religious Sisters, and several religious Orders. Since its beginning the Cathedral has welcomed not only Catholics but anyone interested in sharing their pride in and curiosity about Sacramento's history and beauty.
Good to Know:
The cathedral is open to visitors of all faiths — no religious affiliation required. Non-Catholics very welcome — this host isn’t Catholic either!
Photography is NOT permitted inside the cathedral or on the front steps.
The Christmas decorations will be up and glowing, even though the busy holiday season has passed.
Perfect for art lovers, history buffs, and anyone who appreciates architectural beauty and spiritual ambiance.
This tour takes place just before a construction project begins, making it one of the last opportunities to experience the cathedral in its current state.
