The Kaleidoscope vs. Telescope Perspective:

For as long as autism has been studied, it has often been framed as a "disorder" or a "disability." But what if the real issue isn’t autism itself, but rather society’s misunderstanding of how autistic individuals think?

Many of us on the spectrum don’t struggle with basic life functions—we struggle with being understood. This misunderstanding creates unnecessary barriers in relationships, workplaces, and social settings. I believe this is because autistic and neurotypical people fundamentally process the world in different ways.

To explain this difference, I use the Kaleidoscope vs. Telescope Perspective.

The Neurotypical Mind: The Telescope Perspective
Neurotypical individuals tend to think in a linear, goal-oriented way. Their minds function like telescopes:
• They focus on a single goal in the distance and move toward it with structured steps.
• They filter out distractions or alternative possibilities, prioritizing efficiency.
• They rely on routines, schedules, and clear expectations to navigate life.
This kind of thinking is beneficial for building careers, following social norms, and achieving specific outcomes. However, it can also cause people to miss important details, overlook alternative solutions, or fail to "live in the moment."

The Autistic Mind: The Kaleidoscope Perspective
People on the autism spectrum, on the other hand, process reality more dynamically. Our minds function like a kaleidoscope, meaning:
• We see multiple perspectives, patterns, and possibilities all at once.
• Instead of following a straight line to a goal, we absorb a wide range of information in real time.
• We often get labeled as "distracted" or "unfocused" when in reality, we are processing far more than what others notice.
This perspective allows us to notice small details, anticipate potential challenges, and make deep connections between ideas. However, it can also overwhelm those who are used to thinking in a linear way.
