Welcome Evening: Introducing Oxford Books in Translation

Welcome to Oxford Books in Translation – a new reading group for those who want to see what the world is thinking.

Over the last decade, translated books have moved from the margins to mainstream reading, so it’s a perfect moment to explore how rich and varied (and often daring) world literature can be.

This first session is simply a chance to meet each other, talk about the kind of books we love, and shape what the group will become. We'll talk about why a reading group for translated books and how the group will work. There's no book to read in advance.

Many of the books we’ll discuss in this group will sit alongside the kinds of titles recognised by prizes such as the International Booker, though the group won’t be limited to contemporary writing — we’ll also look at translated classics and older oddities.

During this welcome session we'll:

• get to know each other
• chat about what we want from the group
• explore possible themes for future months
• vote on the first theme for January
• choose the first book together (from a shortlist provided)

Venue: We’ll be in the quieter upstairs area of The Chequers. I’ve booked tables for a small group and can adjust once I see RSVPs — please only reply ‘yes’ if you’re fairly sure you’ll come.
