UPDATE - new earlier start time! Dick's just told us that they will be closing early for new winter hours. So this event will now start 30 minutes earlier at 6:30. No worries if you show up late. Come anyway!
Inspired by ChooseFI podcast episode 569 (Always Come Back to the Why),* let’s have a conversation about our “why.”
Part 1, Why FI? Why are we doing this wacky counterculture thing?
Potential discussion questions: What personally motivates you? Has your “why” evolved over time? Do you find it helpful to come back to your reasons and/or talk about them with others? Some people in the FI community say that it’s important to retire to something rather than be running away from something—what do you think?
Part 2, Why this FIRE Meetup? What would you like to contribute to and get out of this group in 2026? Bring your ideas and energy! So far, thanks entirely to Organizer Mike, we’ve been having topical discussions on the first Monday night of the month at Dick’s. And we’re testing out a new Friday daytime hangout in November.
But the sky’s the limit. Other FI groups do all kinds of things like hikes, happy hours, picnics, financial case study discussions, etc. Going forward, what might we like to do? Would anyone else be willing to occasionally facilitate a Monday night discussion, help come up with discussion topics behind the scenes, host bonus events, or have ideas about participating in other ways? Does anyone have ideas for future discussion topics they want to raise now?
Part 3, If we have time at the end, we could also take a look together at our mission statement and discussion guidelines. Now that we’ve been meeting for a while, anything we want to change or add?
Finally, if you can’t make it to this meetup but want to weigh in, please add your thoughts to the meetup discussion board.
*listening to this podcast is definitely not a prerequisite for attending and participating
