A Polyglot Exploration of DataFrames
Details
Hi Adelaide Pythonistas,
I am excited to announce opening meeting for 2026 !!
Pandas? Narwhals? Ibis? Let's explore the zoo of Python DataFrame implementations. What can we learn by putting them side by side? We'll run the same data transformations across packages as well as several other implementations in R, Julia, and Haskell. We'll tease apart where their APIs agree and disagree, and ask what each design reveals about its host language's philosophy. By the end, you'll have a richer mental model of what a DataFrame actually is ... and isn't.
Speaker:
Jonathan Carroll : After hopping from theoretical physics to statistics to computational biology and data engineering, Jonathan has grown fond of learning as many programming languages as possible and comparing how they solve different problems for the end user. He blogs about his polyglot explorations at jcarroll.com.au
