In 1916 Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves. 100 years later their existence was confirmed by LIGO scientists using NumPy. NumPy is the fundamental package for scientific computing with Python. It is used extensively from the discovery of gravitational waves to sports analytics to finance. At the heart of NumPy is the ndarray. A powerful, fast and versatile data structure and the defacto array data structure used in scientific computing today. But what is NumPy? Should we use it? How do we use it effectively? This beginner level talk aims to answer these question by providing an overview of NumPy's focusing on the ndarray.

Kai is a software developer at BHP and has been using Python since high school. As a scientific computing enthusiast and a maintainer of SciPy he has used NumPy extensively and enjoys sharing his experience.
