Glider Port & Sorrento Valley: Winter Solstice Walk
Details
WINTER SOLSTICE - Overview: An urban walk - half sidewalk, half dirt trail. Distance about 8 miles. Duration about 3 hours. Total elev gain about 600 ft, including one very steep dirt trail. This is not a casual stroll: we'll be walking briskly, about 3 mph.
Route: We'll start at the cafe at Torrey Pines Glider Port and enjoy the view over the ocean, then head inland past Salk Institute, then then down a very steep dirt trail into Sorrento Valley. Then up a very steep dirt trail to the BioTech park, then south back to UCSD, make a loop through UCSD and admire the sculptures, and return to the Glider Port. Coffee and lunch available at the Glider Park cafe. See photos below for a diagram of the route.
Hazards: We'll be going up and down some very steep, slippery dirt trails, so hiking poles are strongly recommended. If you have extra poles, bring them in case others need to borrow them. We'll go thru some bushes, so wear long pants if you want to avoid scratches. We'll walk on some streets do not have sidewalks, so you must be alert to traffic. Though rare, there are rattlesnakes on the dirt trails in Sorrento Valley.
Start time: Meet at 8:30am, start walking 8:35am.
Where: Glider Port cafe: 2800 Torrey Pines Scenic Dr. From North Torrey Pines Road, drive west on Torrey Pines Scenic Drive to the end, where you'll see a small building housing the Glider port cafe/admin building (2800 Torrey Pines Scenic Dr). Park near the building and we'll meet at the picnic benches north of the building.
Parking: Free parking in Glider Port dirt parking lots.
Restrooms: Porta-Potties at start/end of walk. Also in UCSD mid-walk.
