What we’re about
Welcome Savvy Readers!
*Join us as we get together about one Saturday a month to chat over our monthly book selection in a cafe or coffee shop setting (we mostly read fictional novels).
*Savvy Readers aims to be a positive, welcoming experience, and a place to have discussions with other readers in a respectful, enjoyable manner.*
*Attendee Cost:
We currently are trying a new voluntary pay model. If you wish to contribute, the suggested amount is sliding scale: $1–$2 for one meetup or $2–$6 for every 2–3 meetups you attend. The idea is that contributions are optional and meant to be modest :)
*A warm & special thank you to those who have contributed*
~Please note, contributions should not exceed $22 a year.
~You can pay via Venmo or Zelle. The organizer can share details at a meetup, or you can message me in the app for the info.
~You may also support the coffee shop meeting place with a menu purchase per your personal preference and budget.
Key Notes:
- New members are always welcome!
- We meet in Chicago, usually in the Loop or River North neighborhood, about one Saturday out of the month.
- *It’s ok if you don’t finish the book each month! As long as you don’t mind spoilers, read or audio-listen to your preference, and feel free to join us for our discussion.
- Of course, it's alright if you do not like a book. That said, please remain respectful in how you share your reading experience and perspective :)
- ******Please note, as books contain a range of content, please explore and see book information for tone or content alerts based on your needs and preferences. Some readers find sites like Story Graph or other online sources helpful for visibility into topic considerations.******
- Due to a limited number of seats available for each monthly meet up (~10-12 total), please watch for registration to (usually about 4-5 weeks prior to event), and reserve your spot via the Meet Up app under this group.
- Audio listeners are welcome and encouraged!
- Look for announcements on the next book selection and voting rounds, which are posted in the app.
- Contact organizer Maria via direct message in this app with questions. I am always happy to chat, and would love to hear from you!
We hope to have you join us soon!

***SEA OF TRANQUILITY BY EMILY ST. JOHN MANDEL***
Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal—an experience that shocks him to his core.
Two centuries later a famous writer named Olive Llewellyn is on a book tour. She’s traveling all over Earth, but her home is the second moon colony, a place of white stone, spired towers, and artificial beauty. Within the text of Olive’s best-selling pandemic novel lies a strange passage: a man plays his violin for change in the echoing corridor of an airship terminal as the trees of a forest rise around him.
When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the black-skied Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in the North American wilderness, he uncovers a series of lives upended: The exiled son of an earl driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe.
A virtuoso performance that is as human and tender as it is intellectually playful, Sea of Tranquility is a novel of time travel and metaphysics that precisely captures the reality of our current moment.
