Qubes OS - A Reasonably Deep Dive - SecTalks SYD0x56 (86th)
Details
# Presentation
The Qubes Project maintains an operating system that assumes that your machine has already been compromised. It compartmentalises every single component of your computer, while still allowing complete freedom to fine-tune that compartmentalisation. Whilst from the outside, Qubes OS appears to have a very steep learning curve, it actually doesn't.
It is also undergoing extensive usability overhauls and improvements, many of which will allow more people to perform "secure by default" computing.
This presentation will give you a rundown of Qubes OS, what makes it unique, as well as cool things that actually make your life easier (not to mention a LOT safer). The presentation will also cover its history, its creators, the wonderful community of users, future plans for Qubes OS (including how YOU can contribute), some use cases, including some security-industry-focused workflows, as well as some fantastic side-projects the Qubes team if involved in, such as SecureDrop.
This presentation covers concepts in a broad, abstract, non-technical way, making the content accessible to everyone regardless of technical knowledge.
And for those who are keen, bring your payloads, physical pentesting tools and gadgets, because there will be several laptops available after the presentation for you to try your best at pwning them.
Additional notes:
-
There will be quite a lot of humour in this presentation (I mean, it's tough enough to talk for half an hour about an operating system AND keep people entertained...).
-
It touches lightly on quite a few subjects that I'd happily present in great detail as their own presentation if people wanted to, but I wouldn't be able to do it in an hour....
