About us
This page covers the Missouri Ozarks and Springfield area outings and events!
This is a group for anyone who likes to get outside and enjoy nature-- you don't have to be a Sierra Club member! We will be organizing hikes, float trips, camping, and other outdoor adventures! All skill levels welcome!
The Sierra Club is America’s largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization, with more than 3.5 million members and supporters. In addition to protecting every person's right to get outdoors and access the healing power of nature, the Sierra Club works to promote clean energy, safeguard the health of our communities, protect wildlife, and preserve our remaining wild places through grassroots activism, public education, lobbying, and legal action. Explore Big Spring sensitive area, connect with other nature lovers, and learn about all of the proposed wilderness areas in Missouri and how you can take part in protecting these wild land resources!
The long-studied Big Spring Area totals 8,048 acres of rugged wooded hills. We will explore the Mark Twain National Forest portion (4,512 acres), the west side of the area, from roadside vistas along Skyline Drive and inspect the beginning of approximately six miles of the Ozark Trail crossing through Wild Horse Hollow and upper Chilton Creek Hollow on the National Forest.
Adjoining lands on the east side are owned by the National Park Service, Ozark National Scenic Riverways (3,536 acres). That includes the old growth forest of the Big Spring Pines natural area. We will walk a short trail on the park portion of the Big Spring Area which leads to an old fire tower lookout.1 attendee
Stream Sampling at Shepherd of the Hills State Park
Location not specified yetHave you ever wondered about the many tiny creatures living in our Ozark Streams? The White River Group of the Sierra Club is going to help collect and count all kinds of aquatic macro invertebrates, such as snails and crayfish, at Shepherd of the Hills State Park on Saturday, June 20.
Shepherd of the Hills State Park is one of our newest state parks, purchased in 2016 and working towards opening to the public. Sierra Club members are playing a critical role in the parks protection through activism and advocacy. This outing will give participants a sneak peek at this beautiful new park - plus we will be helping with important research.
