Martha Clara Nakato HIV ADVOCATE LIVING WITH HIV FIGHTING STIGMA
Details
On SpeakUP! International, hosts Rita Burke and Elton Brown welcome Ugandan advocate Martha Clara Nakato, a representative to the NGO Delegation to UNAIDS. Martha shares how being born with HIV and losing her mother shaped her mission to end AIDS-related deaths and expand access to treatment.
She discusses how lifesaving therapies have changed HIV outcomes, yet stigma, misinformation, and unequal access still keep many from care. Martha challenges harmful myths and stresses that education, compassion, and truth are essential to overcoming fear and discrimination.
Encouraging young people to lead with purpose, she calls for human-centered policy work and community-wide responsibility. She also recounts learning her status at 14 and the doctor who helped restore her hope.
