This September, Sunday Vacations is heading to Bosnia & Herzegovina for a week of mountains, culture, food, history, road trips and good company.
We'll start in Sarajevo, explore the mountains surrounding the city, travel south through Bosnia into beautiful Herzegovina, and return to Sarajevo for our final evening together.
The idea is simple: discover an amazing country with a small international group, without turning the trip into a rushed coach tour.
Expect hiking, beautiful landscapes, Bosnian food, historic towns, coffee stops, road trips, shared dinners and plenty of time to get to know the people you're travelling with.

🏔️ THE TRIP
Day 1 - Arrival in Sarajevo
The Brussels group arrives in the morning, giving us almost a full first day in Sarajevo. We'll explore the old city before meeting everyone for our Sunday Vacations welcome evening.
London participants arriving later can simply join us that evening.
Day 2 - Sarajevo
We'll discover a city shaped by Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Yugoslav and modern European history.
Later we'll head into the mountains above Sarajevo for views, walking and some Olympic history.
Day 3 - Bosnian Mountains
We'll leave the city for a moderate mountain hike through some of Bosnia's beautiful landscapes.
You don't need to be an experienced hiker, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours on mountain terrain.
Day 4 - Road trip to Herzegovina
Time to head south!
We'll travel through mountains, rivers and small towns towards Herzegovina, with stops and experiences along the way.
We'll arrive at our second base in the afternoon and explore around sunset before dinner together.
Day 5 - Discover Herzegovina
A day of historic towns, rivers, countryside, viewpoints and waterfalls.
Depending on the weather and final programme, there may also be an opportunity for swimming or relaxing beside the water.
Day 6 - Adventure and return to Sarajevo
We'll slowly make our way north again, including another nature or outdoor experience along the way.
Back in Sarajevo, the evening will be flexible for dinner, drinks or exploring.
Day 7 - Slow Sarajevo
After several active days, we're deliberately keeping our last full day more relaxed.
Sleep a little longer, have Bosnian coffee, explore, shop, wander around or simply enjoy the city.
In the evening we'll meet again for our Sunday Vacations farewell evening.
Day 8 - Departure
Time to say goodbye to Bosnia and probably start planning the next trip. 😊

👥 WHO CAN JOIN?
This trip is especially suitable for international people, expats and solo travellers who want to discover Bosnia as part of a group.
You don't need to know anyone beforehand. In fact, many people join Sunday Vacations trips alone.
You should simply be open to meeting new people, exploring a different culture and taking part in moderately active days.

🥾 WHAT TO EXPECT
This is an active community trip, so expect quite a bit of walking and one moderate mountain hike.
Bring comfortable walking or hiking shoes, a small backpack, waterproof jacket and clothes suitable for both warm days and cooler mountain conditions.
The final itinerary may change slightly depending on weather, availability and local conditions.

We’ll experience the exhibition together in the morning, share lunch at the museum, and then leave Tervuren on foot - trading museum galleries for forest trails as we make our way towards Brussels

## 🌿 Experience Overview

Our day begins with culture.

At the AfricaMuseum, we'll discover The Congo Panorama 1913, an exhibition examining an idealised representation of Belgian colonial rule created for the 1913 Ghent World Exhibition.

The exhibition asks us to look beyond the image: what was shown, what was hidden, and whose voices were excluded.

Through contemporary perspectives, research and artistic contributions, it confronts the original colonial narrative with histories of exploitation, violence, resistance and voices that were long marginalised.

After exploring the exhibition, we'll gather for lunch at the museum's Africafé, giving everyone time to eat, talk and get to know each other before the active part of our day.

Then we head outside:

We'll leave the museum behind and walk approximately 12 km through the Sonian Forest, following forest paths towards the historic Rouge-Cloître site in Auderghem.

### 10:00 - Meet at AfricaMuseum

We'll meet outside the AfricaMuseum in Tervuren.
Please arrive a little before the meeting time so we can introduce ourselves and enter together.

### 10:00–12:00 — Congo Panorama & Museum

We start our Sunday with the temporary exhibition.

*“The Congo Panorama 1913. Colonial Illusion Unmasked.”

We'll have approximately two hours inside the museum

Explore at your own pace, connect with others and take time to reflect on what you see

### 12:00 - 13:00 - Lunch Together 🍽

Before hitting the trail, we'll have lunch together at Africafé at the AfricaMuseum

The museum describes its new restaurant as offering Belgian brasserie classics alongside dishes influenced by Central African cuisine

Food and drinks are ordered and paid individually and directly to the restaurant

This is also our chance to recharge and get to know each other before the hike

### ±13:15 - Start the Hike

Time to exchange museum corridors for forest trails

We'll leave Tervuren and begin our approximately 12 km walk towards Rouge-Cloître

### Afternoon - Sonian Forest ?

We'll make our way through the Sonian Forest at a comfortable social hiking pace

This isn't a race.

We'll keep the group together, take short breaks when appropriate and leave plenty of space for conversations along the trail

### ±16:30–17:00 - Rouge-Cloître

We finish at the beautiful Rouge-Cloître site in Auderghem.

After approximately 12 km together, we'll take a moment to celebrate the finish, relax and say goodbye - or continue for an optional drink if the group feels like it.

From Rouge-Cloître, participants can make their own way home by public transport.

*Times after lunch are indicative and may change depending on the group, trail conditions and weather.

The Sonian Forest can be muddy after rain, so choose footwear accordingly.

Distance: approximately 12 km

Participants should be comfortable walking this distance on natural forest paths and potentially muddy or uneven terrains.

This is a social hike, not a competitive or high-speed hiking event.

The activity takes place partly outdoors and is weather-dependent. The route, timing or programme may be adjusted where necessary for safety or practical reasons.

The exhibition addresses Belgian colonial history and includes themes involving colonial propaganda, exploitation, violence and resistance. Participants may have different personal and cultural relationships with these subjects. Please approach conversations with respect and openness.
