Details
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BEFORE YOU SIGN UP !!
This getaway is supposed to be a social event and involves an overnight stay in Vero Beach (or nearby), a beach town on the East Coast of Florida. During the 3 days we will among others walk, ride our bikes and attend a Blues Festival.
In case you don't want to spend two nights in a hotel or any other accommodation, you can still sign up for each or any of the three days individually.
We will stay for two nights from Friday, February 27th to Sunday, March 1st, 2026. Accommodations are plentiful in the area but you will have to make your own arrangements. You might want to book now, you can always cancel later if needed (make sure you read the fine print).
If you want to join us on several days, please sign up for each day separately so that we know whom to expect.
Vero Beach Getaway (Day 3): Bike ride plus lunch & sightseeing in Fort Pierce
You can pick your own breakfast place and join us at the trail.
08:45 AM: Let's meet at the Historical Jungle Trail Parking Lot at the northern end of the Pelican National Wildlife Refuge.
09:00 AM: Kick off for a casual bike ride on the Historic Jungle Trail.
It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was originally a sandy road built in the 1920s for the citrus growers on the barrier island (called Orchard Island). The trail passes through hammocks of palms and other coastal wetland species, as well as gated communities, spectacular homes and the shores of Indian River Lagoon. Total length is about 16 miles r/t.
The road is sandy but mostly hard packed and best suited for hybrids and wide-tire bikes.
After about 0.5 miles we will make a short diversion along the Centennial Trail (walking only, bike racks available). The Centennial Trail is a part-paved and part-boardwalk trail leading to a spectacular lookout from which we will see the original Pelican Island.
The scenery is wonderful with hopefully lots of nesting wood storks, pelicans, egrets, herons and ospreys, to name a few species. You might want to bring along your binoculars.
Our next stop along the trail will be Captain Forster Hammock Preserve. Here we might explore on foot some of the trails through lush vegetation.
We will continue our ride until we reach Jones Pier, part of a late 19th century settlement.
After a break and some pictures we will ride to the end of the trail and return the same way.
01:15 PM: Drive to Fort Pierce. The town is about 45 minutes south.
02:00 PM: Lunch at Cobb's Landing (200 North Indian River Dr., Fort Pierce).
Right after lunch we can walk a little and explore downtown Fort Pierce.
04:30 PM: Drive home. We will have about 2 hours of daylight left.
If you have any questions or need directions, you can always text or call us at (917)774-0941.
