Step out onto the windswept moors of Yorkshire and into one of the most haunting tales ever told. Whether you’re drawn
by the raw, untamed passion of Catherine and Heathcliff or the chilling, gothic atmosphere that has captivated
audiences for nearly two centuries, Wuthering Heights remains a powerhouse of literary and cinematic intensity. It is
a story that defies the boundaries of traditional "romance," offering instead a visceral exploration of the human soul
at its most obsessive and beautiful.
Written by Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights follows the life of Heathcliff, a mysterious foundling brought to the
Earnshaw family estate. His intense, soul-deep bond with Catherine Earnshaw sets off a chain reaction of passion,
betrayal, and a multi-generational cycle of revenge. Spanning decades and two families—the Earnshaws and the
Lintons - the story examines how social class, rejection, and unyielding pride can transform love into a destructive
force of nature.
To get our gears turning, we’ll be diving into:
* The Anti-Hero: Is Heathcliff a victim of his circumstances, or is his cruelty inexcusable?
* Atmospheric Directing: How does the setting of the moors function as a character itself in the newest adaptation?
* Love vs. Possession: Does the bond between Catherine and Heathcliff represent a "higher" love, or is it a toxic
obsession?
* Cycles of Revenge: How do the actions of the parents echo and distort in the lives of the second generation?
While we can touch upon past adaptations—from the classic 1939 film to more recent interpretations—our
primary focus for this meetup will be the 2026 version. We’ll discuss how this latest adaptation interprets Brontë’s
prose for a modern audience and whether it captures the "wildness" that earlier versions sometimes polished away.
Whether you’ve read the book a dozen times or just finished the latest film, we want your voice in the circle!
Join us on July 11 in Vancouver for an evening of deep dives, differing opinions, and great company. We can’t wait to see you
there!
