Conowingo Dam is best known as a great spot to view and photograph Bald Eagles. At certain times of the year large numbers of them congregate by the dam, but this majestic bird is almost always present here due to a sizeable number that nest along the river nearby. Along with the bald eagles there can be found a wide diversity of birds, with over 230 species reported at this location. The long, narrow island just south of the dam is home to a great blue heronry which should be active with nests full of young when we visit. Ospreys also nest here in abundance, as do a pair of peregrine falcons. Black-crowned night-herons can also be spotted along the river, and the edge of the woods adjacent to Fisherman’s Park and the sycamore trees along the riverbank can hold orioles, vireos, warblers (including prothonotary), and flycatchers.

We will be birding from the parking lot and observation deck, so we will not be moving far from our vehicles. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Photographers, bring your long lens - the sun will be behind us as we look at the river. As always, all ages and birding experience levels are welcome to join us although children must be accompanied by an adult. There are multiple portable restrooms on site.

Accessibility: A paved walkway along the riverfront observation deck is easy to navigate and provides excellent viewing from a wheelchair. The viewing area is raised above the parking area but is accessible via a sloped ramp. The paved parking lot extends for over a third of a mile between the shoreline and a wooded hillside, and the edge of the woods as well as the river can be birded from the parking lot. Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are available.

Please join us for a program in support of the National Blind Birders Bird-A-Thon!

The Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon is a 24-hour birding event designed for birders who are legally blind. This inaugural event encourages participants to identify as many bird species as possible by sound (or sight!), celebrating accessibility and the joy of birding.

Our field trip will be led by birdsong expert Rick Keyser and is open to everyone - visually impaired or fully sighted, new to birding or experienced. Our goal is to foster community, increase participation in birding for people who are legally blind, and embrace birding by ear for everyone.

If attending, please remember that 'silence is golden' as this program will lean heavily into listening for the birds. Please remember to keep chatter to a minimum, as any noise can be very distracting for people who are focusing on bird sounds.

We will be travelling at a slow pace along an ADA-accessible fully paved trail. There are no restrooms available on site.
