Western Australia is one of the most culturally diverse regions in Australia. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in community services, education, and decision-making, a critical question arises: how do we ensure AI systems are fair, inclusive, and culturally aware of the communities they serve?

This workshop is guided by Australian ethical and governance frameworks, including the Australian AI Ethics Principles, and the AI Impact Assessment Tool.

Participants will examine how commonly used AI tools and models perform when applied to Western Australian community contexts, and where they may fall short in recognising cultural nuance, lived experience, and diversity.

Through guided exercises and localised scenarios, participants will learn how to identify bias, assess fairness risks, and apply mitigation strategies to ensure AI-supported services remain inclusive, trustworthy, and aligned with Australian community values.

What You Will Learn:

  • Bias Detection Techniques: How to critically test and “red team” AI prompts and outputs to identify bias, exclusion, or unfair assumptions.
  • Bias Mitigation & Correction: Practical techniques to reduce skewed or harmful outputs, including prompt refinement, human oversight, and contextual safeguards.
  • Fairness & Community Validation: How to engage with stakeholders and community representatives to validate whether AI outputs are fair, appropriate, and culturally inclusive.
  • Applying Ethics to Practice: Translating Australian AI ethics principles into everyday decision-making.

  • Not-for-Profit Organisations (NFPs)
  • Community-focused professionals
  • Public-facing service providers
  • Students interested in AI, ethics, and social impact
