Monday Night Write Club
Details
Ever told yourself you’d start writing comedy but never quite found the time?
Monday Night Write Club is a casual weekly gathering at the Bassendean Hotel where comedians and aspiring comedians sit down and actually do the work. Some people arrive with notebooks full of half-finished ideas. Others come to workshop a new bit, punch up a joke, or simply carve out an hour in the week to focus on writing.
You can join a small group and peer-review jokes, bounce ideas around, or head off to a quiet corner and write on your own. The goal is simple: be around people who are doing the same thing. The energy of a room full of people thinking about comedy tends to get the brain moving.
It’s also a comfortable entry point for people who have been curious about stand-up but haven’t taken the leap yet. You can listen, contribute, ask questions, and get a feel for how comedians build material before stepping on stage.
Write Club attendees also get the chance to run one of their jokes live. Each week there is an allocated segment in the 7:30pm comedy show at the Bassendean Hotel where Write Club members can test a line or two in front of a real audience. It’s a low-pressure way to see what works.
Stick around afterwards and you’ll also see working comics trying new material, along with the occasional touring act or headliner dropping in to test fresh ideas.
Whether you’re writing your first joke, sharpening your act, or just looking to be around people who enjoy the craft of comedy, Monday Night Write Club is a good place to start.
