Chinese New Year Market City Walk in Guangzhou (Yide Road & Pearl River)
Details
Chinese New Year is not only about the holiday itself, but also about the ritual of preparation.
Before the festival, families head out to buy decorations, snacks, and special ingredients, filling the streets with color, sound, and excitement.
On this city walk, we’ll explore Yide Road New Year Market, one of the most authentic places in Guangzhou to experience how locals prepare for the New Year — a scene rarely included in typical tourist routes.

🧧 What we’ll explore
• What Chinese families traditionally buy for Chinese New Year, and why
• Streets overflowing with red New Year decorations, couplets, lanterns, and red envelopes
• A wide selection of snacks, nuts, dried fruits, and festive treats
• Traditional dried seafood and preserved goods, an essential part of Cantonese New Year culture
• Colorful toys and small gifts, popular for children during the holiday
⚠️ Important note:
Because of the dried seafood stalls, there will be noticeable smells in some sections. This is a very local experience, but may not be suitable for those sensitive to strong odors.

🏛 Cultural & architectural highlights
• Walk past the Sacred Heart Cathedral, a Gothic stone church completed in 1888
