Lehigh Gap Hike! 12.5M, 2500': Boulder Climb • Wildlife Refuge • Superfund Site
Appalachian Trail Parking, Walnutport, Walnutport, PA, US•• Thank you for answering qualifying questions as you RSVP! ••
Join us Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 8:45am (sharp!) for a fast-paced, fitness hike* exploring the Lehigh Gap! Hike includes two boulder scrambles/climbs and a bit of off-trail meandering/bushwacking.
We will begin our hike climbing the east side of the gap, a 1000 ft, very rocky, very steep (almost vertical) trail for a beautiful view of the Lehigh River. We will continue our hike on the Appalachian Trail to a view of the Palmerton Superfund site, a deforested ridge due to zinc smelting from 1898-1980. After descending the Winter Trail, we will cross the 873 Bridge over to the Lehigh Gap Wildlife Refuge. We will explore the trails of the refuge for about 10 miles (2000' gain).
Dogs welcome; however, this hike does involve a significant boulder climb, your dog MUST have experience with significant, vertical boulder climbing to be allowed on this hike. Please note in comments if you are planning to bring your pooch!
*IMPORTANT NOTE:
While this is anticipated to be a fast-paced hike, expect some stops to enjoy the trail & allow the group to regather. Thank you for being mindful of group unity.
