Kubernetes (http://kubernetes.io/)has quickly become the most important project in the distributed systems space. The 1st act of this meetup will feature a look at where Kubernetes is now and where it's headed from Google's Kubernetes project manager. The 2nd act will take a look at WeaveScope (https://github.com/weaveworks/scope)which allows one to inspect and interact with container systems like Kubernetes.

This will be the first meetup at Kinvolk (https://kinvolk.io/)'s new office. Kinvolk will supply food and drinks for the occasion.

[19:00 - 20:00] Kubernetes: (part 1) Present and future & (part 2) standard interfaces for a diverse ecosystem - David Aronchick, Senior Product Manager for the Google Container Engine (https://cloud.google.com/container-engine/), and product manager on behalf of Google for the Kubernetes Project

[20:15 - 20:45] Monitoring, visualizing & managing container systems w/ WeaveScope - David Kaltschmidt, WeaveWorks (https://www.weave.works/)

Talk details

The first act will be split into 2 sections:

"Kubernetes: (part 1)Present and future": The talk will cover 3 topics on Kuberenetes: How adoption of Kubernetes has lead to an industry revolution in shipping distributed software quickly, reliably and at scale; new features in Kubernetes 1.4 including simplified setup, cross-cluster/cross-cloud federation and one-click app setup (and many many more); What's coming in Kubernetes 1.5 (and beyond)

"Kubernetes: (part 2) standard interfaces for a diverse ecosystem": This will be an open discussion about the efforts to standardize interfaces for container runtimes (CRI), storage, networking (CNI), etc. and what that means for the kubernetes project and its users.

"Monitoring, visualizing & managing container systems w/ WeaveScope": Monitoring containers comes with its own challenges. Some containers are there all the time and form part of your cluster while others are ephemeral and just pop in and out. This is where classic monitoring breaks down. This talk discusses (1) the pros and cons of the approaches we took for data collection as well as visualisation, (2) how it integrates with Kubernetes and Prometheus, and (3) how to develop your own data sources.
