Film screening: Freedom Fields

Draper Hall

8,00 GBP

Maghreb Cine's next screening is Freedom Fields (2018; Cert: PG; 97 minutes), an inspiring feature directed by Naziha Arebi. Doors open 3.30pm, film/feature starts 4pm. A relevant speaker will be invited to present the film. "Filmed over five years, Freedom Fields follows three women and their football team in recent Libya as the country descends into civil war and the utopian hopes of the Arab Spring begin to fade. Through the eyes of these accidental activists, the reality of a country in transition is seen and the personal stories of love and aspirations collide with history. An intimate film about hope, struggle and sacrifice in a land where dreams seem a luxury. A love letter to sisterhood and the power of team." There'll be food on offer - and you can take something to share if you wish. There'll also be mint tea, coffee, biscuits, cake and more. Attendees are encouraged to network before and after the screening. Venue is wheelchair-accessible. Venue address: Draper Tenants' Hall, Hampton Street, Junction with Newington Butts, London, SE17 3AN. (Directions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJNA3rHAaqs&feature=youtu.be) Tickets - £7 plus small booking fee via https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/maghrebcine/t-opjndk or £8 on the door. Book Club - Quran and the Secular Mind by Shabbir Akhtar

Do you often feel that you have to defend the faith of Muslims frequently amongst individuals that have hostile views of Islam and looking for some reading material? This book is relevant in light of Muslims living, working (and publicised via media outlets) in secular societies. This book explores how conscientious agnostics and atheists view Islam and how the author responds to these questions This meetup is to set up a book club session to discuss and read a chapter at a time from an academic book called Quran and the Secular Mind by Shabbir Akhtar ( a Cambridge-educated philosopher and currently an associate member of the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford). In this meeting we will discuss Chapter 3: The Moral Challenge of Secular Humanism. The text of the book is available here: https://archive.org/details/TheQuranAndTheSecularMindByShabbirAkhtar Thanks
