AppliedAI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to developing the next generation of AI leaders in Minnesota. We do this through a conference, podcast, weekly news, monthly newsletters, YouTube channel, and monthly meetups. Our events provide education, hands-on training, and real-world AI applications to help people of all ages learn how to use AI to solve real-life problems.
Additionally, we encourage you to subscribe to our Conversation On Applied AI Podcast. We publish new episodes every other week on topics related to Artificial Intelligence and its applications! We also publish a Monthly Newsletter with details on our current events and ways to engage with our community.
What is Artificial Intelligence
In computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans. Leading AI textbooks define the field as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is often used to describe machines (or computers) that mimic "cognitive" functions that humans associate with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem solving".
What is AppliedAI?
Simple. :) It's the real-world applications that these far-fetched, big ideas lead to. Some things around us that are applications of AI include digital assistants (Google Home, Alexa), self-driving cars, robots, chatbots and many many more!
Who should go AppliedAI Meetups?
This group is a place for anyone who is interesting in learning, sharing and applying Artificial Intelligence to their products and services. It's also for people of all ages just interested in what's going on in the AI space by networking and talking with real-world practitioners of this exciting and new technology.
What happens at AppliedAI Meetups?

Overview
We've seen incredible progress toward superhuman performance on PhD-level tasks, but are we truly on the path to usefully intelligent AI? This talk explores Moravec's Paradox, the still relevant observation that models struggle where humans excel, on common sense reasoning and basic pattern recognition. Does this come from competition among the major labs to best each other’s performance on increasingly difficult tests? We'll discuss alternative benchmarks, like Simple Bench and ARC-AGI, that challenge AIs to do what we find easy. By understanding these benchmarks, AI leaders can better assess their options and anticipate where AI is headed. Dr. Thomas Feeney is helping to shape the next generation of AI leaders as the inaugural Program Director for the Master of Arts in Artificial Intelligence Leadership at the University of St. Thomas, where he also serves as an Associate Professor of Philosophy. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from Yale University, where his research focused on Early Modern philosophy (notably Leibniz) and metaphysics. Dr. Feeney's inquiry now extends to artificial intelligence, particularly its ethical dimensions and the nature of machine reasoning. This focus is informed by his participation in activities like the AI Safety Camp and his contributions to the University's Institute for AI for the Common Good. Many of you may remember my previous MinneBar talk "Side Projects for Fun and Profit." Today, I'm sharing a different journey – one that began with a routine checkup revealing concerning biomarkers and led to an unexpected exploration of how AI can transform health management.
Between brief doctor visits every few months, I found myself turning to AI for guidance – asking detailed questions about diet modifications, medication interactions, and lifestyle adjustments. By capturing food images, tracking metrics, and providing health context, I received increasingly personalized guidance that produced measurable improvements in just three months.
This experience highlighted a critical gap in our healthcare system: the lack of intelligent day-to-day guidance between medical appointments. Drawing on my engineering background, I've been developing a solution that combines medical records, wearable data, and AI to provide continuous, personalized health support – turning scattered numbers into actionable insights.
What's particularly promising is how this approach could democratize healthcare for widespread conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. By making personalized guidance accessible regardless of location or socioeconomic status, we can help address health inequities that disproportionately affect underserved communities.
