Navigating Consumer Lag in Kafka: Monitoring, Impacts, and Solutions
Abstract:
This presentation will delve into the significance of a high consumer lag, exploring its implications on consumers and the Kafka cluster. We will analyze this issue layer by layer, providing a comprehensive view of the end-to-end impact. Additionally, we will discuss monitoring strategies from the cluster administration perspective and offer solutions for reducing the lag from both the Kafka cluster administrator and consumer viewpoints.
Bio:
With over 18 years of IT experience, my expertise lies in Unix and Linux programming, as well as systems administration. For the past 4 years, I have specialised in Kafka .During my tenure at Adevinta for the last 8 years, my passion has been finding innovative ways to reduce costs, enhance performance, and optimise resource utilisation.

Abstract:
In this talk, we will explore how Sabadell Bank has implemented the Kappa architecture to revolutionize its real-time data strategy. We will discuss the challenges faced, the solutions adopted, and the results achieved on the path to more efficient and effective data management. Through real examples, we will demonstrate the importance of modern data architecture in the financial sector and how Sabadell is leading this change.
Bio:
I am a Telecommunications Engineer with a postgraduate degree in Big Data and Data Science. I have developed my professional career in consulting, specializing in technological transformation projects and architecture solutions for many clients. Since 2020, I have been working at Sabadell Bank as a data architect, where I am responsible for design authority data stack.
