Among the pantheon of historical portrait painters, few are more notable than John Singer Sargent. He innovated an effortless and beautiful style of portraiture that still sets the standard for portrait artists today, and in this class we’re going to explore his technique. Although Sargent’s portraits appear loose and slapdash, they were meticulously refined over many layers of direct painting and completed with a final veneer of well chosen accent strokes. The painting we’ll be studying is Sargent’s incredible portrait of Elizabeth Chanler from the National Portrait Gallery. We will cover his first marks with charcoal, to his palette and the first layer of form with the features omitted, followed by how to refine each feature, and finish with the final thick highlight strokes.
