November Meetup - UX & Cognitive Accessibility
TravelPerk, Nova House, 3-5 Ponton Street, Edinburgh, GBWelcome to the EdinburghJS October Meetup! We'll be meeting on Tuesday 18th November, 18:30 for light refreshments and talks at the TravelPerk offices, Nova House, 3-5 Ponton Street.
Our talk this month is from Fanny Demey on UX & Cognitive Accessibility:
Cognitive accessibility ensures that digital experiences are easy to use for people with diverse ways of thinking, learning, and processing information. It focuses on reducing mental effort, simplifying choices, and making interactions intuitive for everyone. In this talk, we’ll explore how to simplify user experiences using cognitive accessibility principles. We’ll dive into real-world examples, both good and bad, to see what truly makes a design understandable, intuitive, and inclusive. You’ll learn best practices for creating cleaner interfaces, using simple language, and adding meaningful visual cues that make products easier for everyone to use.
Good design isn’t just beautiful, it’s also understandable and usable by everyone.Ready to rethink your UX?
Fanny is a freelance fullstack developer and accessibility expert who loves improving user experience (UX) through an accessibility lens. When she is not coding, she helps companies meet accessibility standards. Over the past few years, she has worked on an application for people with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as another used by blind and low-vision users. These experiences helped her identify common issues, such as screens overloaded with information or lacking essential context, and inspired her to design more intuitive, inclusive interfaces. In 2023, she published a book on Android accessibility and is now recognized as a Google Developer Expert.
If you are interested in speaking at any of our other events, then please get in touch via our speaking and volunteering form, or join our Scottish Technology Club Discord Server. We are happy to accomodate small "lightning talks" alongside our main talk for people to showcase projects, or to take their first steps in speaking at an event.
Our talks aim to introduce members of the community, fostering networking, mentorship, learning, and collaboration. Everyone is welcome—whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned engineer.
Enjoy pizza and drinks before the talks—a great chance to network with fellow JavaScript enthusiasts.
A livestream will be available on the evening on the Scottish Technology Club YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/@scottechclub - thanks to LiveToAir.
If travel costs are a barrier to attending, please let us know—we have a diversity and hardship fund to assist.
Space is limited, so please keep your RSVP status up to date to help others attend if you can no longer make it, and also to give us an idea of numbers to provide catering for.
