Hello hikers!
This time we will be going to one of the most impressive hiking route in the Sierra Espadán! We will start our hike in Alfondeguilla before passing through Fonteta ravine until the Castro Castle where you can admire the remains of the wall, the castle’s tower and the roman aqueduct “L’Arquet“.
Although the castle’s construction is of Arab origin, the location of the Castro castle, also called Castro de Alfondeguilla, was occupied by a Roman watchtower. The castle is located on the ridge of the Sierra de Espadán, at an altitude of 787 meters.
The San José Caves are in fact an underground river flowing for 2.5km under beautiful rocky formations. With a temperature of +20 degrees, the river of San José is considered the longest navigable underground river in Europe.
The Caves which sometimes are called “the heart of the earth” are full of stalactites and stalagmites that you will see during the boat ride as well as some cave drawings left centuries ago. After some reconstructions and light installation in 1920’s the route became more open to tourists and much safer. A unique place to visit for sure!
