La Vía Verde del Mar, from Benicassim to Oropesa

A beautiful seaside stroll along an old railway line along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

Hello Fellow Hikers,
After what feels like 40 days and 40 nights, these rains are forecast to end.
This Saturday October 18th we will be trying out a wonderful new route taking the Vía Verde abandoned railway line from Benicassim to Oropesa. We will meet in Cabañal cercanias station at 08.00, and catch the 08.21 train to Benicasssim, arriving at 09.28. From there we will walk down through the town to the seaside to the beautiful Almadraba beach. At the end of the beach we will pick up the Via Verde, which will take us along the coast between the hills and the sea, through old railway cuttings and tunnels, past an old watchtower built to warn of pirate attacks, alongside beautiful coves, through more tunnels till we finally reach the golden sands of Oropesa beach. Weather permitting we will stop here to swim and sunbathe before heading up through the town to catch the 14.53 train back to Valencia.

Warning: This is a test run of a new route for us, so not everything may go as planned. There may be hiccups along the way.

Route details:
Length: 13 km
Level: Easy (I think)

What to wear: light clothes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, trainers are probably best for this.
What to bring: more sunscreen, your swimsuit, towel, packed lunch, at least 1.5 litres of water, a waterproof jacket in case of showers or the weather turns chilly.

The train tickets for this outing are a little pricier than normal, given that we will be taking trenes regionales. The return ticket to Orpesa costs 11.80 euros. We will be getting the 08.20 train from Cabanyal and the 14.53 train back. You can buy the tickets on the RENFE app or website. If you live in the centre of Valencia, you can get the train at 08.08 from Valencia Nord station.

Después de lo que parecen 40 días y 40 noches, se prevé que estas lluvias terminen.
Este sábado 18 de octubre probaremos una nueva y maravillosa ruta por la Vía Verde, una vía férrea abandonada, de Benicàssim a Oropesa. Nos encontraremos en la estación de cercanías del Cabañal a las 8:00 h y tomaremos el tren de las 8:21 h a Benicàssim, con llegada a las 9:28 h. Desde allí, caminaremos por el pueblo hasta la hermosa playa de la Almadraba, junto al mar. Al final de la playa, tomaremos la Vía Verde, que nos llevará por la costa entre las colinas y el mar, atravesando antiguas trincheras y túneles ferroviarios, pasando por una antigua torre de vigilancia construida para advertir de ataques piratas, junto a hermosas calas, atravesando más túneles hasta llegar finalmente a la dorada arena de la playa de Oropesa. Si el tiempo lo permite, pararemos aquí para nadar y tomar el sol antes de subir por el pueblo para tomar el tren de las 14:53 h de regreso a Valencia.

Advertencia: Esta es una prueba de una nueva ruta, por lo que puede que no todo salga según lo previsto. Podría haber contratiempos durante el trayecto.

Qué llevar: ropa ligera, sombrero, gafas de sol, protector solar; probablemente lo mejor sean unas zapatillas deportivas.
Qué llevar: más protector solar, bañador, toalla, comida para llevar, al menos 1,5 litros de agua y una chaqueta impermeable por si llueve o refresca.
Los billetes de tren para esta excursión son un poco más caros de lo habitual, ya que tomaremos trenes regionales. El billete de ida y vuelta a Orpesa cuesta 11,80 euros. Cogeremos el tren de las 8:20 desde el Cabanyal y el de vuelta de las 14:53. Puedes comprar los billetes en la app o la web de RENFE. Si vives en el centro de Valencia, puedes coger el tren de las 8:08 desde la estación Valencia Nord.
